Racking Inspections

The purpose of racking or rack inspections is to ensure safety and enounce safety in the work environment.

The storehouse equipment Manufacturers association (Sema) have set out a set of guide lines for this purpose.

Rack Frames 19

The Sema Guide classifies damage into the following three categories: -

· Red Risk

· Orange Risk

· Green Risk

Red Risk.

These are items which are severely damaged well beyond the limitations of the Sema Code. In such circumstances, the racking should be immediately off - Loaded and isolated from time to come use until fix work is carried out.

Orange Risk.

These items are damaged beyond the limitations of the Sema Code, but not sufficiently serious to warrant immediate Off-Load of the rack. The rack should be Off-Loaded as soon as potential but usually within 4 weeks, and should not be re-used until fix work is carried out.

Green Risk.

These are items which are damaged but are within the limitations of the Sema Code. Such items would be recorded as being still favorable for use but be identified for time to come reference and monitoring.

When inspections of racks and racking is carried out there are a number of assessments that are required, and some of these assessments will include:

· assessment of damage to uprights and bracing members

· assessment damage to beams

· Checks are made on Frames: Base Plates: Beam Levels: Floor Fixings: Column Guards and Load Notices.

All racking must display Load Notices stating allowable beam and bay loads, and any damaged components must be supplanted like for like.
